  • Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair

A distinguished graduate of the Air Force Academy, Captain Nair secured the coveted “Sword of Honour” and began his illustrious career in the IAF in 1999. He has mastered various fighter aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, Hawk, and Dornier. His academic excellence continued as he topped his class at the US Air Force Air Command and Staff College in Alabama.

  • Group Captain Ajit Krishnan

An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA), Captain Krishnan’s academic brilliance shone through as he received the President’s Gold Medal and the “Sword of Honor” at the Air Force Academy. Commissioned into the IAF in 2003, his dedication led to promotions to Wing Commander and later Group Captain. A seasoned flying instructor with over 2900 flying hours, he has flown diverse aircraft like Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, and Jaguar.

  • Group Captain Angad Prathap

Another NDA graduate, Captain Prathap joined the IAF fighter stream in 2004, steadily climbing the ranks to Group Captain. A skilled flying instructor and test pilot, he boasts over 2000 flying hours across various aircraft, including Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32.

  • Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla

Following in the footsteps of his fellow astronauts, Captain Shukla graduated from the NDA in 2006 and joined the IAF’s fighter stream. A fighter combat leader and test pilot with 2000 flying hours, he has flown top-notch fighter planes like Su-30 MKI and MiG-29. He earned his promotion to Wing Commander in 2019.

Their expertise in critical thinking and rapid decision-making honed through IAF training makes them ideal candidates for this historic mission.

Forging Spacefaring Heroes: The Astronauts’ Training

These four aspirant astronauts were selected from a cohort of numerous IAF officers aspiring to partake in space exploration, following a meticulously conducted selection procedure. This comprehensive program entailed 218 lectures delivered by esteemed faculty members from both ISRO and the Indian Institute of Science, in addition to 75 physical training sessions aimed at ensuring their optimal physical conditioning. Furthermore, they engaged in two flying practice sessions, amassing a cumulative flight experience of 12 hours. Subsequently, rigorous medical and course assessments were administered to ascertain their preparedness for the rigors of space travel.

In the year 2020, the shortlisted candidates commenced their journey to Russia, where they underwent generic spaceflight training at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, before returning to India in 2021. Since then, they have been diligently undergoing further training, including specialized instruction at the Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru. These Indian Air Force test pilots, chosen for India’s inaugural Human Space Flight Programme, Gaganyaan, have successfully completed the first semester of their crew training

In India, the astronauts are receiving theoretical courses in engineering disciplines, Gaganyaan flight systems training, and aero-medical training. Practical training on simulators and flight procedures is also part of the curriculum. The training encompasses topics like spaceflight basics, propulsion, aerodynamics, launch vehicles, and spacecraft. Additionally, physical training, aero-medical training, and flying practice are provided to familiarize the astronauts with crew module systems.

Setting the Stage for Liftoff: A Nation in Anticipation

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is working at an accelerated pace to ensure the Gaganyaan mission’s success. This includes:

Uncrewed Test Flight: ISRO plans an uncrewed flight this year to test the systems and gather critical data.

Milestones achieved

Human-Rated Rocket: The LVM3 rocket has undergone extensive modifications to meet safety standards for human spaceflight and is now designated as HLVM3.

New Orbital Module: Atop the HLVM3, a newly developed orbital module will house the crew compartment and service module.

Extensive Testing: ISRO scientists have conducted numerous tests on various components, including engines, crew modules, and escape systems, leveraging decades of experience to ensure a safe and successful mission.

A Dream Realized: India’s First Steps into Crewed Spaceflight with the crucial completion of the CE20 cryogenic engine testing, all major ground qualification tests for the Gaganyaan mission are complete. This signifies a significant milestone towards realizing India’s dream of sending its own astronauts into space.

The Road Ahead: A Nation United in Anticipation

The Gaganyaan project aims to demonstrate India’s human spaceflight capability by sending a crew of three members to a 400 km orbit for a three-day mission and safely returning them to Earth by landing in the Indian sea waters. The first uncrewed trial flight for Gaganyaan is scheduled for late 2023 or early 2024. Following this, Vyom Mitra, a humanoid robot, will be sent before the crewed mission takes place

The Gaganyaan mission is a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to space exploration and its pursuit of scientific advancements. The nation eagerly awaits the launch of this historic mission, as the four astronauts embark on a journey that will inspire generations to come. As they prepare for this extraordinary endeavor, the entire nation stands united in wishing them success and a safe return
